But Marcella Riggins needs no one. Flush from her brush with death, she's finally gained the control she's always sought--and will use her new-found power to bring the city of Merit to its knees. She'll do whatever it takes, collecting her own sidekicks, and leveraging the two most infamous EOs, Victor Vale and Eli Ever, against each other.

With Marcella's rise, new enmities create opportunity--and the stage of Merit City will once again be set for a final, terrible reckoning.

Thank you to NewSouth Books for providing me with a copy of this book for review. All thoughts are my own.

Well it’s been a while since I have sat down and written a review – close to 6 months - so bear with me on this one. I couldn’t choose a better book to come back into reviewing with. Vengeful was well and truly worth the wait – I feel blessed that Schwab decided to write a sequel for Vicious.

Vengeful is a bloody, powerful and mesmerising read. I couldn’t take my eyes off the page once my brain decided it was in the mood for reading haha. Schwab brings to life characters that have so much life in them – you can picture them clearly in your head and their actions.

We are reunited with some of our favourite and least favourite characters from the first book Vicious; Victor, Eli, Sydney, Dol and Mitch. The relationship between Victor, Syd (Sydney) and Mitch is a family tie – no matter how hard Victor tries for it not to be.

Eli, our beloved? Twisted murderer returns – locked away… working for the “enemy” but for how long?

Sydney has grown – mentally – since the first novel, it was intriguing reading her POV as she wrestles with guilt over Victor and her own sister Serena.

Victor is a changed man – since his death, he isn’t right anymore and he is on a mission to return himself to “normal” before death comes to him again… permanently.

However, this book doesn’t just concentrate on our favourite EO’s (Extra Ordinaries) – we also meet Marcella. A woman with a need for vengeance and a lust for power. Marcella is a newly awakened EO, betrayed by her husband she is on a war path and no one will get in her way.

Power is the main focus within this novel – Power, it can be all consuming – taking everything in its path, eventually the person who has craved it and spent their time chasing it.

Vengeful makes you question humanity, what defines good? What defines evil? Are we all made up of a little both? Vengeful is also a salute to women – we are powerful and we can do whatever we put our minds to – we can be nasty. In the famous words of Marcella Riggins “Ask nice. Play nice. Marcella was so fucking tired of nice.” – That has to be one of my favourite quotes from this novel.

The novel was plotted out on a timeline – it was suspenseful and you could feel the plot building as you got closer and closer to the present day. It also showed us flashback insights to the characters that we had not seen before and showed us how it shaped them into the people that they are today.

I hope I have covered off what I wanted to haha – in short – this novel was epic – strong and full of bold characters. A sense of awe fell over me whilst reading this book – it hits the nail on the head for many of the issues we face in the present day – with people and their need for power.

The ending of the novel has left me with hope that we may get a third novel - I will cross my toes and fingers because I need more of these characters in my life.

Below are a few of the quotes I enjoyed most from this novel:

“Maybe we are broken. But we put ourselves back together. We survived. That’s what makes us so powerful. And as for family—well, blood is always family, but family doesn’t always have to be blood.”

― V.E. Schwab, Vengeful

“I don't want to survive. I want to thrive.”

― V.E. Schwab, Vengeful

“Every end is a new beginning.”

― V.E. Schwab, Vengeful

“Men look at anyone with power and see only a threat, an obstacle in their path. They never have the sense to see power for what it really is. Potential.”

― V.E. Schwab, Vengeful
