A laugh-out-loud, heartfelt YA romantic comedy, told in alternating perspectives, about two Indian-American teens whose parents have arranged for them to be married.
Dimple Shah has it all figured out. With graduation behind her, she’s more than ready for a break from her family, from Mamma’s inexplicable obsession with her finding the “Ideal Indian Husband.” Ugh. Dimple knows they must respect her principles on some level, though. If they truly believed she needed a husband right now, they wouldn’t have paid for her to attend a summer program for aspiring web developers…right?
Rishi Patel is a hopeless romantic. So when his parents tell him that his future wife will be attending the same summer program as him—wherein he’ll have to woo her—he’s totally on board. Because as silly as it sounds to most people in his life, Rishi wants to be arranged, believes in the power of tradition, stability, and being a part of something much bigger than himself.
The Shahs and Patels didn’t mean to start turning the wheels on this “suggested arrangement” so early in their children’s lives, but when they noticed them both gravitate toward the same summer program, they figured, Why not?
Dimple and Rishi may think they have each other figured out. But when opposites clash, love works hard to prove itself in the most unexpected ways.
I received an e-ARC of this novel from Hachette Australia via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts are my own.
I received the e-ARC of this novel very close to release day so I was fortunate enough to be able to buy the physical copy mid way through reading the e-ARC and I finished reading it in paperback format.
Any of my followers on Instagram and twitter will tell you that I am not a fan of contemporary novels; I struggle with them greatly. Fantasy is my go to genre – I’ll pick a fantasy novel over a contemporary any day… BUT I have to say, Menon has won me over with this utterly adorable and heart smooshing (yes smooshing) novel. To say I am in love with this novel is an understatement. I am absolutely smitten with When Dimple Met Rishi – I just adore them so much and my heart is so full of happiness after reading this novel.
When Dimple Met Rishi is a diverse and beautifully written contemporary novel that follows two American Indians whose families are very traditional and it follows their story during one summer. It wasn’t just a story about falling in love and living up to your family’s expectations, it was also a story about being true to yourself and following your dreams no matter what, it’s your life to live and you need to live it the way you want to. Life happens, things change and this novel depicts it perfectly.
The characters, as I said above – I am absolutely in love with Dimple and Rishi! (I’m still giggling at the iced coffee encounter) As well as Celia and Ashish – I love them all! I really loved the character growth and just how realistic the novel was; It was perfect reading from both Dimple and Rishi’s point of view and seeing the both of them change and grow as well as the acceptance and changes within their strong cultural families.
I found myself giggling, smiling from ear to ear, clutching my chest and trying not to cry throughout this novel.
When Dimple Met Rishi is honestly right up there with one of my favourite reads of 2017 and I will cherish the way these characters have made my heart swell to three times it’s normal size with how much I just love them! (I shall now go hug the book a little bit!).
