When assassins ambush her best friend, the crown prince, Rielle Dardenne risks everything to save him, exposing her ability to perform all seven kinds of elemental magic. The only people who should possess this extraordinary power are a pair of prophesied queens: a queen of light and salvation and a queen of blood and destruction. To prove she is the Sun Queen, Rielle must endure seven trials to test her magic. If she fails, she will be executed...unless the trials kill her first.
A thousand years later, the legend of Queen Rielle is a mere fairy tale to bounty hunter Eliana Ferracora. When the Undying Empire conquered her kingdom, she embraced violence to keep her family alive. Now, she believes herself untouchable--until her mother vanishes without a trace, along with countless other women in their city. To find her, Eliana joins a rebel captain on a dangerous mission and discovers that the evil at the heart of the empire is more terrible than she ever imagined.
As Rielle and Eliana fight in a cosmic war that spans millennia, their stories intersect, and the shocking connections between them ultimately determine the fate of their world--and of each other.
I received a finished copy from the Australian publisher NewSouth Books in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts are my own.
Furyborn is a book that never stops; it is honestly go-go-go from the very start and continues all the way to the end.
I will be honest, at first I was really worried that I had been wrong and that this book was not for me. The two POV told 1000 years apart, I found hard to grasp and I did not particularly grip onto the two main characters until I was a solid way into the book. Alas, I found my groove with the characters and the parallel storylines and found myself falling into their worlds.
We begin with a prophecy, two Queens will rise, one good, one bad to sum it up. It’s obvious that the two POV’s you follow are the two Queens, but watching their journey’s and how they are coming into the prophecy is beguiling to read. Both characters are strong empowering woman in their own way and they each have their own journeys, Rielle to prove she is the Sun Queen, the good one. Eliana, to save her mother who has disappeared along with countless other woman.
Rielle; She is strong, wild, rash and brought up with a life of privilege but also a strict upbringing brought on from a dark moment in her Past. For all that she cares and loves, deep down she is wicked and we do see that come out. I am really dying for the second novel in this trilogy – we know how Rielle’s story ends, but I cannot wait to see how she gets there and the path she takes.
Eliana; She is strong and wild just like Rielle, also rash in her decision making but she is different and you can feel it – she tries to hide the good in her but you see it seeping out throughout the novel. She was brought up as a survivor and she will do whatever it takes to survive and keep her brother safe.
The character’s journeys are filled with action, twists and turns and plot BOMBS that will leave you gobsmacked. I did guess one particular plot twist, however the way it came about did surprise me and I didn’t 100% know it so I was still quite pleased by it.
There is of course romance, a bit of flirting, forbidden love a rebellion and assassins just to add a bit more suspense to this already crazy epic ride.
Friendships, lovers, rebellion and tyranny are all found in this epic fantasy and it will leave you begging for more – oh and did I mention the magic and Angels?! Yes, you read that right. There is some really intriguing magic within this novel; the Empirium, and I cannot wait to learn more about it in the second book and especially watch it manifest within the characters. AND YES! Angels – not really the good ones though unfortunately for our characters – fortunate for us though as it does provide a really unique twist and entertainment for us, the readers.
As I said at the beginning of this review, this book literally NEVER let’s down. It’s constantly on the go. Action in nearly every single chapter. There are of course softer moments the two main female protagonists have but 95% are CRAZY! I couldn’t pull my eyes from the pages once I got into this book.
I am eagerly awaiting book two to continue this insane ride these characters are on.
