A heart to protect. A debt to repay. A game to win.
After being swept up in the magical world of Caraval, Donatella Dragna has finally escaped her father and saved her sister Scarlett from a disastrous arranged marriage. The girls should be celebrating, but Tella isn’t yet free. She made a desperate bargain with a mysterious criminal, and what Tella owes him no one has ever been able to deliver: Caraval Master Legend’s true name.
The only chance of uncovering Legend’s identity is to win Caraval, so Tella throws herself into the legendary competition once more—and into the path of the murderous heir to the throne, a doomed love story, and a web of secrets…including her sister's. Caraval has always demanded bravery, cunning, and sacrifice. But now the game is asking for more. If Tella can’t fulfill her bargain and deliver Legend’s name, she’ll lose everything she cares about—maybe even her life. But if she wins, Legend and Caraval will be destroyed forever.
Welcome, welcome to Caraval...the games have only just begun.
I received an advanced copy of this novel from the publisher Hachette Australia in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts are my own.
Legendary takes off from the end of the first novel Caraval. I’ll admit, I was a bit worried I would feel a sense of Deja-vu reading this novel – how wrong I was. Garber has shown that her imagination knows no boundaries and her ability to create a magical world where readers feel as if they are really there astounds me.
The magic within Legendary and this series in general is so unique and I my heart beats faster reading each and every page. You feel as if you are playing the game along with the characters.
Legendary takes us down a much darker path than Caraval did. Told from Scarlett’s sister Tella’s POV, we are brought back into the dark world of Legendary and his twisted game of Caraval.
I was hesitant about reading from Tella’s POV, I didn’t take to her well in the first novel, however Garber has proven me wrong again and I absolutely adore Tella. She is fun, witty, wild and so much more! She is such a thrill to read about and I am so glad that it appears she will also have the main POV in the third novel (I hope so!).
There is of course the reappearance of many characters from the first novel, ones you hate and ones you love. The ever present thrill of trying to work out who is Legendary is hung over your head throughout the novel and the reveal is perfectly executed, I’ll admit by the time it was revealed I was pretty sure I knew who it was and I was spot on.
We also meet new characters, enigmatic and slightly twisted – The Fates have come out to play and the world will never be the same, Tella’s especially. The introduction of the Fates and it intertwining with Tella’s past and present future added a new twist into this novel that made the game of Caraval that much more dangerous and harder to tell what was real and what wasn’t.
Where would this crazy wild ride be without the taste if romance – whilst it does feature throughout the novel, it was not overbearing. It was real, there was no hint of insta-love. Tella and Dante’s banter gave me life and left me grinning from ear to ear and laughing.
The plot of this novel moves quickly over the course of several days/nights (mainly nights as Caraval is played at night) and I honestly could not turn the pages quick enough. Putting the book down to go to sleep was painful and it always happened on a cliff-hanger chapter too! I loved the twists and turns, the big reveal of Legendary and the even bigger ending that has left me begging for book three.
The magic of this series has it’s claws into me and I will never get enough of it. One thing is for sure, Caraval may have come to a close again in Legendary, but the game is far from over…
