The Cruel Prince

Of course I want to be like them. They’re beautiful as blades forged in some divine fire. They will live forever.

And Cardan is even more beautiful than the rest. I hate him more than all the others. I hate him so much that sometimes when I look at him, I can hardly breathe.

Jude was seven years old when her parents were murdered and she and her two sisters were stolen away to live in the treacherous High Court of Faerie. Ten years later, Jude wants nothing more than to belong there, despite her mortality. But many of the fey despise humans. Especially Prince Cardan, the youngest and wickedest son of the High King.

To win a place at the Court, she must defy him–and face the consequences.

In doing so, she becomes embroiled in palace intrigues and deceptions, discovering her own capacity for bloodshed. But as civil war threatens to drown the Courts of Faerie in violence, Jude will need to risk her life in a dangerous alliance to save her sisters, and Faerie itself.

TRIGGER WARNING; This book does have elements of abuse that some readers may find distressing.

I received an ARC of this book from Allen&Unwin in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts are my own.

There is a reason why readers call Black the Queen of Faerie writing and I completely agree with them. The Cruel Prince is my first Holly Black novel and I can tell you right now the obsession has begun. I need all of her books STAT!

The Cruel Prince was one of my most anticipated novels of 2018 and it did not disappoint. A mesmerising novel full of magic, deceit, cruelty and desire. Black weaves a world that instantly pulls the reader in. This isn’t a world full of butterflies and roses, no one is safe in fairyland. Full of horrors and dark beauty, you cannot put this book down.

He characters are all wicked and cunning in their own ways, including our main protagonist Jude, a human and her twin sister Taryn. I instantly felt a connection with Jude, she has her faults, she wants to prove to the Faeries she is more than just a play thing for them to taunt. Her growth throughout the book was delightful to read, especially when she delves into her darker self and becomes cunning and wicked.

Black really knows her Faerie lore and the myths/stories surrounding them, it is shown clearly throughout the novel, from the smallest of detail to the personalities of the different fairies.

I delighted in the cunning, malicious ways of the Faerie, they’re wicked and twisted – inside and out and it provided a read so captivating.

The plot flows through the novel at a captivating pace, I honestly struggled to put this book down, I went through 300+ pages in one night! At no point do you forget where the novel is going, Black ensures the reader is reminded of the plot throughout the novel. I was left speechless at multiple times throughout this novel, not just when there was a plot twist, but also just at the things the characters did – it was shocking but delightful haha.

I honestly cannot wait to see where book two will take us after that HUGE twist at the end. I’m excited, nervous and shipping people so hard and I am scared I will be left devastated – bring on book two!
